A few months ago, my aunt Marilyn and cousin Alana put together an amazing cookbook full of recipes my grandmother used to make, with pictures of her handwritten recipes, and pictures of her when she was young. It is truly magical. My grandmother was an amazing cook. There was not a single thing she made that I did not love. I have such fond memories of going to her apartment on Shoal Creek and all sitting around her oval dinning table eating dinner Friday and Saturday nights. Everything she made was simply delicious.
So the original plan was that we were all going to pick different recipes from the cookbook and give her a big meal of all her Tunisian dishes she used to make. But when Carol asked her what she wanted for her birthday dinner she said spaghetti and meatballs. Apparently when my mom was growing up, this is the meal they would eat Friday nights. So spaghetti it was!
For desert, we all chose different sweet recipes from the cookbook and had an amazing spread of all of our favorite sweets she used to make--macrud, brica, strawberry icecream cake, and caikas. It was so, so fun, and so, so special to all be there together, celebrating and eating foods we all loved and grew up with.
It was really such a special night celebrating Mom!
