We Love You Uncle Leon

We lost a great man on Friday morning.  Uncle Leon, my fathers uncle, my great uncle, was an amazing, sweet, beautiful man.  He had the most infectious smile and was always so, so sweet to me. We was so smart and instrumental in building Austin's retail.  He had the wits to be able to see where Austin was moving in terms of property and development and did a tremendous job at buying valuable property.
We love and will miss you!

SCHMIDT, Leon This is to commemorate the life of Leon Schmidt, who passed away today, December 27, 2013, at the age of 97 years. He was born February 16, 1916, in Yorktown, Texas, the third child and only son of Jacob and Bertha Schmidt. Leon moved with his family to Austin in 1928 so that he and his sisters could attend Austin High School, as there were not adequate schools in Yorktown. Leon graduated from Austin High in 1932. He was class valedictorian, and was a charter member, at Austin High, of the National Honor Society. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Texas, where he could attend classes and work in the family business. He graduated from UT in 1936. After that, he entered the Business School at Harvard University, attaining his MBA in 1938. He enlisted in the Army at the start of WWII, entering as a Second Lieutenant, serving in the Quartermaster Corps in the Philippines, Australia, and New Guinea. At the conclusion of the war, Leon returned to Austin to work with his father in the family business. His first major project was to engineer the conversion of that business, then called the Jacob Schmidt Store, from a general dry goods store on East Sixth Street across the street from the Driskill Hotel, to a better ladies' and children's specialty fashion business. He located this store on the more upscale Congress Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets, next to Scarbrough's, and named it Yaring's, after his mother's maiden name, Yahr. He was a visionary business leader ever since, continuing to adjust to changing conditions and tastes, not only in retail, but in real estate and finance, as well. Leon was also generous with his time and resources, helping to make Austin the great community it is today. Some of his pet projects included the Austin Symphony, Mexic Arte Museum, the Dell Jewish Community Center, and the Dell Children's Hospital, where the Meditation Garden is named in his honor. Leon married Barbara Cowen in 1953, and is survived by his loving wife and their four children and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Edythe Kruger, of Austin. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Bock and Sylvia Schwartz, of Dallas, and Lena Simon, of Austin.

Lights!!!!!

All is calm on the 3nd day of Christmas vacation....only 14 days to go!

The weather has been a little crazy...hot one day, cold and rainy the next...it is keeping us on our toes.
We kicked off our vacation with the last day of school for the boys and their Christmas pageant.
As always, and expected, Owen stood on stage looking like a deer in headlights scanning the audience looking for me.  Once he found me he gave a little smirk and went back to his glazed over stare until his class was done singing.

Eli had been practicing his line and all the songs all week long. And according to his teacher, always did great in rehearsal.  When it actually came down to saying his line, he was starring off into space and not only missed his cue to say his line, but never even realized he missed it!  But he sang all the songs confidently and happily.

Cash and I sat in the audience quietly watching, and he wanted to make sure we didnt miss a good shot. My friend Marisa took this picture of us. I held the camera and he (pretended) to film on the Flip.

We have spent a good amount of time in our pajamas hanging around the house these last few days but have managed to go out and do a few festive activities.

I love that Owen is holding a Lego guy, Cash has a box of raisins in his hand, and Eli is holding onto Larry.  Cash will bring you his shoes and put them in your face until you put them on, whether we are leaving the house or not!

We hit up Motzart's light show earlier this week.  Two minutes in Eli was asking when we could leave because he was bored, and Cash was more interested in the calculator that he snagged from my dad's desk earlier in the day when we went to see him at the store.  But all in all, it was fun.

We also made it down to The Trail of Lights Friday night. Friday was an unseasonably warm day! We spent the first half of the day outside.

And the evening at the lights equipped with a parking pass and sponsor passes to go in early.

Excuse the bad quality of pictures. I only had my phone with me!

Merry Christmas and Good luck to my fellow winter breakers....grey hairs to follow!

Celebrating Baby D!

In about 8 weeks (MEK), Rachel and Hobo will have their first baby. I can not wait!!!!  I mean, I am just as excited about Rachels baby being born as I was for all of mine!!!

These last few weeks we have celebrated Baby Davis' arrival with a couple of showers.
My mom has wonderful friends and they threw a shower for Rachel a few weeks back for our cousins, aunts, and family friends.
They did an amazing job with decorating and delicious food!!!

We have known most of these women for most, if not our entire lives and they are all so very special to us!

This last weekend, I hosted a shower with a few of Rachel's best friends at her friend Ashley's house.  She has some wonderful friends who helped me throw a wonderful shower!  It was a super cold morning but it did not stop all of her friends from showing up.

Our theme was "Bow or Beau," hence all the bows and mustaches, since she isn't finding out what she is having.
We each chose a prop depending on what we think she is having.

We had a Soup and Salad brunch with Rachel's absolute favorite soup (Portuguese Soup) and four difference salads and a handful of other finger foods.

If you know Rachel, you know she cries, a lot!  She did a great job of holding it together the entire shower, until she opened up the gift from the hostesses.  We got her her bedding that she is totally in love with and didn't think she would get.  It is beautiful and I can not wait to see that precious baby sleeping on it.  We just delivered our crib that all three of our boys slept in to Rachel and Hobo's house so that all of their babies can now use it.

It was really such a fun shower and I think Rachel loved it.  Now, we are just waiting for that baby to make his or her appearance!
