Pick up a ParentWise

If you are out and about in the next few weeks, you should pick up a copy of the May issue of ParentWise.  Not only because its a nice little magazine to flip through to get ideas of things to do with a little one, but look at this......!
I mentioned a few weeks back that we were invited to a "Picture Party" for a photographer named Nina Miller.  Eli was particularly cranky during our "mini session" and was certain not a single good picture was taken.  But I got an e-mail from Nina today telling me that our picture was chosen from a focus group of mamas to be featured in her ad!  So check it out!

Finally a Pretty Day!

After a week of rain, we finally had a pretty day and took advantage of the beautiful weather!

Eli's newest Eli-ism is pointing to his ear whenever he hears something....please pretend like you cant see the mess behind him that we call our garage!  We have lots of stuff in there in anticipation of a new baby!

Snot, Sneezes and Schmidts!

Friday night started out with a boom! As I was brushing my teeth, I heard a noise from Eli's room, not the sounds I usually hear, an occasional cough or little sound as he moves around his crib looking for the perfect spot to sleep. I grabbed the monitor and I saw what I thought was something projectile from his mouth as he sat up in his crib. I ran in his room, only to be hit with the smell of vomit!
Let me back up a few days....he seems to be a little bit fussy and certainly a little more snotty than normal. I had mentioned to Blaine that I thought he was coming down with a cold or something, but otherwise he seemed in good spirits, so maybe not.
So I run and get Blaine to come help me in Eli's room, and he is crying, shaking and covered in throw-up. I picked him up and along came Larry, just buried in it! He proceeded to throw-up probably a good four more times. The poor kid was so scared and snotty, and uncomfortable! I was ready to jump in the car and speed over to Dell Children's, something had to be horribly wrong! Its a good thing I'm married to someone who stays calm and knows what to do in those situations because Blaine was as cool as a cucumber throughout the whole ordeal.
Needless to say, that night was not an easy night. As I was calming down our little baby, and walking him around up and down the street to get him to relax, Blaine was busy changing out his whole crib, looking for a replacement Larry (thank goodness for stand-in Larry!) and rinsing everything out. We were up more than a couple of times that night, and every time I looked at the clock I was hoping the night was over!

So after going to the doctor Saturday morning, his ears checked out great, no fever, so fluid in his lungs--NOTHING! The doctor attributed it all allergies. Apparently they popped up over night?!?!? I'm a little skeptical of the diagnosis as I have read that allergies in toddlers don't start until 24 months at the earliest. Needless to say, all weekend was r-o-u-g-h! He was so snotty, fussy, sneezy and so uncomfortable the whole weekend, which was particularly difficult because it was my paternal grandmothers family reunion--The Schmidt Family Reunion.
I managed to carry around my camera the whole weekend and didn't take a single picture. I guess I was preoccupied by wiping up snot from my sweet little Snot Faucet! It was a wonderful reunion, a huge turnout, and I had no idea that there were so many people in my family that I had never met before!

You gotta see the T-shirts for the reunion....I have no idea who got these made!!!

Thankfully the Children's Clariton and Benedryl brought some relief for Eli and so did the drizzle on Sunday. I'm hoping it was a fluke because he seems to be OK today, so I guess time will tell!

20 weeks already!

This afternoon, I had a doctor's appointment, my 20 week appointment, and everything checked up well.

We first saw the sonographer to check everything out on the baby, and it was amazing, as it always is! We were really hoping to get some good profile shots of the baby, but turns out he is very shy. He would literally turn his head every time we tried, and we tried for a while! We got a couple of good shots, but I haven't had the time to scan them yet. But baby looks great and is right on target!
My weight was good; my blood pressure was good; the baby's heartbeat was strong and steady; and yeah...I guess that's about it. The whole appointment with the doctor took about 5 minutes. 10 tops.

My belly button is starting to pop out and Eli discovered "Mommy's belly button" today and just randomly comes up to me, pulls up my shirt, sticks his finger in my belly button and cracks up! Lets just hope he doesn't just lift up my shirt in public!

So in the course of pregnancy, childbirth and child-rearing, I am going to get a LOT of advice and opinion. And everyone is convinced that theier method is the right one. Which brings me to a decision that I made about this pregnancy--I plan to run throughout the whole darn thing (or at least as long as I can)!

I avoided running like the plauge the first time around due to being beyond paranoid that something may go wrong during my pregnancy. Not to mention that I had the freedom to workout whenever I wanted to and could spend as much time as I wanted at the gym or swimming laps at the pool. I dont have that luxury anymore. I have been running for over 11 years. When I run, my head clears, Im less stressed, I have more energy, running makes me happy and healthy, and I think that this will carry over into having a happy and healthy pregnancy.

After my 4 mile run this morning, which for me pre-pregnancy, was considered a "short" run, I felt like a new woman. Not to mention that Eli is the best running partner I could ever ask for. I stock up the stroller with a snack, his sippy cup, my ipod touch that he can play with while playing my playlist and a few toys in case of a melt down. I point out the birds, and the sqirrels, he gets excited on trash day when he can see the "big truck" or when we pass the school buses in the morning. I make up funny noises everytime we go over a big bump and we sometimes make a pit-stop at the park by our house for a few extra dips, push-ups or core exercises while Eli runs around in an attempt to wear him out before his nap.
Sometimes we are lucky enough to see a few dogs along the way which makes for a few VERY exciting minutes for Eli!
My goal is to enter us into some races in the next couple of months and encourage Eli and his baby brother to carry on a healthy, active lifestyle! I see a couple of little Marathon Kids in our future!

Sure, running helps me maintain physical fitness, but more than that, running helps me maintain my mental health: It helps clear my head, de-stress me, and it just plain makes me happy. When I finish a run, I feel GOOD.

So, I'm gonna keep running. Obviously, if there is ever a risk to the baby, or if it becomes too uncomfortable or painful, then I will quit, but for now, everything is fine so I'm gonna continue for as long as I can.

I can't wait to meet this new little bundle come August and push them together on our runs!

Eggs, Donuts and Pinatas!

There was a lot to celebrate this weekend. Although it wasnt all so happy. A close family friend of our family passed away this weekend. Annie Wise Polansky Davis was 98 years old and lived a very long and happy life. She was a beautiful woman with a heart of gold, a killer personality and will be missed by her family and friends.
And although it was a sad occasion, we were able to gather with her family and friends to celebrate her long life and look back on stories of her life.

Although we dont technically celebrate Easter, we do go to an Easter party at the Johnson's house each year. It was so much fun because Eli was able to (somewhat) participate in the festivities, especially compared to his participation last year.....

I could tell by the perplexed look on his face that he didnt quite understand what was going on, but he did find a few eggs in the Easter egg hunt. But just stood back and watched the older kids hit some colorful thing hanging in the air with a stick, that he so badly wanted to run up to to get a closer look!

And the pinata BURSTS!!!!
Not only was it a first for Eli to participate in a Easter egg hunt, but he also had his first taste of a donut.  Our intentions of not letting Eli have sweets like donuts has gone out the window!  Of course he maybe only had three little bites, but I have found that all the thing you swore you werent going to do before you had kids (eat sweets, watch TV, eat off the ground...), dont always hold true once you actually have your kids!  I look back at the things I said, and how I thought I would raise my kids, and things I thought I would do and I realize that until you actually have a baby, you cant possibly know how you are going to do things.  You cant possibly judge the way other people are raising thier children because until you are actually a parent and doing the parenting yourself there is no way for you to try and put yourself in thier shoes.  Sorry, I digress!  So anyway, so the donut...yum!

Thank you DJ, Barbara, Marley and Dillon for another great Easter Party! We are already looking forward to it next year.
On Sunday, my parents celebrated thier 39th anniversary! Can you imagine?!?!?  I strive to have a marriage like my parents and feel so lucky to have them as my parents! Happy Anniversay Mom and Dad!  We love you so much! Thank you for giving us such a great example to learn from.
