Running on Empty

Literally.  About 4 minutes into my run this morning I realized I had three flat tires. Just my luck on a day like today. I woke up grumpy, Owen slept bad last night, both boys were up by 630, Owens first nap was a disgrace, which is oddly unlike him, Eli smashed Ritz cracker crumbs all into the couch, and I managed to finish off a pot of coffee before 9am. I needed my run so bad today for my mental health so I blew off the fact I was running on all flat tires and kept going (yes, even though I was 4 minutes away from my house). It's always those days where you think you are going to have a bad run that it ends up being fantastic and therapuetic. I'm pretty loyal to Town Lake, but decided to stick to my hood this morning because the thought of getting the boys in and out and in and out of the car and driving too and from was too much for me today. We made it just under five miles without a single fuss. It was a miracle. It gave me the opportunity to have two kids strapped down so I wouldn't have to hold anyone, or listen to things like "I want milk mommy" or "I want a snack" or "Can I jump off the table?" and "Here, you play with this truck" I didn't have to be an umpire for sharing toys or making sure Eli isnt stuffing his blueberry muffin into Owen's mouth.
We ran down to a trail that is about a mile and a half from our house and I let Eli run loose so he could get out some of his crazy energy. It did the trick and he sleeping soundly in bed right now. Oh, and did I mention that when I got home, I had left the front door unlocked and opened? It was that kind of day.

As grumpy as I was as I peeled myself out of bed this morning, I did get to wake up to this...
My mood and the day turned around after our morning jaunt.  Of course the fact that Blaine is home from work and that both boys are taking exceptionally  long naps  helps. Sometimes, I just have days that are hard and everything seems to go wrong, Im tired and feel like Im being pulled in all different directions, but I guess that is the nature of motherhood.  I suspect it doesnt get easier with time, but the needs and wants change.  Im sure I will be looking back on these days with fondness as I worry about my 16 year old boy driving off for the first time by himself, or off with girls, and going to parties.  I have a feeling I will be wishing I was dealing with diapers and toy stealing and bad naps instead of puberty, attitudes and girlfriends.

Crazy Days

Hectic days with two little ones stress me out.  Just trying to coordinate times we can schedule appointments with nap schedules, and how to fit everything in, get everyone fed, and dressed and to keep everyone happy is tough.  Especially when you don't have a live-in nanny to help pack bags, and snacks, go with you to help manage the kids...doesn't that sound lovely? Anyway, I tend to either give myself way too much time of not enough time to get things done during the day.
I accidentally scheduled Owens 9 month well-check (only one month late) at the same time and day as Eli's last swim lesson.  Thankfully Lolli came to the rescue and she took Eli to swim and I took Owen, who decided to practice jumping on the bed instead of taking a nap that morning.  I rushed to my parents house with 30 minutes to spare, don't know how that happened. We made it to Owen's appointment on time, only he was suddenly hungry and very tired. I fed him in the waiting room, nursed him in the room while waiting on the nurse and then roamed the halls to try and calm the outburst that followed.  He was cleared with a clean bill of health.  He is now 29 inches or 75% for height, and weighing in at 21 pounds, putting him somewhere around the 65%.  We barely made it to Mopac before he fell asleep, and slept for over 2 hours.
He has started walking while pushing push toys, wagons, chairs, a box of diapers, whatever he can get his hands on and just cruises around the house.

I was pretty nervous going into these swim lessons based on previous experiences with Eli and the pool.  I was shocked by the enthusiasm and lack of terror he showed on the first day.  He got right in, couldn't wait in fact to get in, and loved it.
Our friend Sarah coordinated and basically hosted our swim lessons.  Eli, along with friends Sophia, Henry, Henry and Reese were in a class together at the Haegelin's home.  Diego (can you think of a better name for a teacher of 2 year olds!!!!) was their very patient swim teacher.

They practiced blowing bubbles

Gliding around the pool kicking

Practiced going up and down the steps
Not everyone was as enthusiastic at Eli was at first.  Henry, sweet Henry wanted nothing to do with the pool at first.

Do you see him sitting way back just watching from afar....he finally warmed up and ended up doing a fantastic job for the first couple of classes.  It only took a little bit of tough love.

I still don't trust Eli for one second in the pool, but he is certainly more comfortable in the water, loves going swimming, and even discovered how fun it is to jump to me from the side.  Once he figured out this fun little trick, he wouldn't stop.  'Swim class? What swim class? I'm just going to jump over, and over, and over again...gliding is overrated.'

Later that afternoon we headed to my grandmothers house to help her move and wait on the delivery of her new washer/dryer and refrigerator.  My dad bought my grandmother a condo a couple of years ago that is about a mile from their house. The only problem was was that it was two story, and with her age (85), those steps were getting tough for her to go up and down.  As soon as a one story condo in the same complex opened up, we bought that one for her so the move was actually only about 60 or so feet from door to door. I cant say that we were much help with Eli running around like a chicken with his head cut off and Owen crawling into everything, but we were able to help with the delivery.  Eli thought the delivery truck and the guys who drive it were amazing.  He followed them everywhere.

Was in total awe of the drill they used, and even found a box to call his 'home.'

After his 'home' was broken down and taken away in the amazing truck, he thought he would entertain us with some singing.  Jesus Loves Me was the song he chose.  If you know my grandmother, you know that she is one of the more religious people in our family.  So choosing that song to sing to her, at her house was extremely comical, to everyone but her.  He hadn't heard that song since he was in school, because we certainly don't sing it at home, but we got a kick out of it and let him sing as much as his little heat desired.

Saturday morning Rachel came to watch the boys for me while I went to my friend Xio's baby shower.  Xio's daughter Sophia and Eli have become quite the buds lately and we are more than thrilled to meet Sophia's little brother who will be here at the beginning of August.

From there, I headed back to my parents to pick up Eli, Owen and my mom to go to her 60th party.  In an attempt to get a picture with the boys, this is about the best we got. You cant quite tell by the picture, but Eli was crying, hit Owen, made him cry, and Eli has tears welled up in his eyes while glaring at me and Owen.

The hosts went above and beyond on the food and decorations.

My mom with the hosts, sans Lisa Gottesman who was out of town.
They even put together a little poem.
Me, Rachel and our two grandmothers Mom (what we call our maternal grandmother) and Maw. Arent they beautiful?
I brought a Pack n' Play so I could put Owen down for his nap at the party so I could stay and enjoy myself. He slept soundly upstairs for an hour and a half while I visited with everyone and caught up with Molly and Sara, two wonderful friends who are more like sisters. We have grown up together since we were itty bitty, and both of thier mothers were hosts.

Blaine came to pick Eli up and take him home for his nap. But not before Susa got ahold of him.

And let him dip his fingers into the cake! To say that he was upset to leave would not do him justice. Haning out with Susu and eating cake was too much fun. Blaine carried him out kicking and screaming, snot running down his face.
The party was fantastic and such a great way to welcome my mom to 60.
The rest of the weekend was a lot more relaxed and included helping my grandmother finish packing and going through stacks and stacks of papers and stuff and getting rid of things she didnt need, including a phone book that was a mere 11 years old. We finishsed off the weekend with some delicious chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes (made by my dad who I swear was a famous chef in a past life), and a relaxed dinner with my family, the Waxmans and Rubinetts.

Summer Time

Summer is here!  Which means school is out (sigh). Eli went to school two days a week this year and made huge strides throughout the year.  He went from screaming and crying when we dropped him off, to walking right in and not turning back.  His vocabulary quadrupled just within the first couple of months, his eating improved, and he learned so much new information.  On the last day of school, parents were invited to come up for a picnic lunch with the class.  Blaine and I both went and loved seeing Eli interact with all the kids.   He got a bucket full of fun stuff for the summer and a cute picture book full of pictures from throughout the year.
Today we drove past his school and he said "I go to school tomorrow?" He loved  school days, probably  not as much as I loved school days, but none the less it was a great experience for all of us and I'm already looking forward to next year.
So, now that summer is here I'm really trying to find ways to wear Eli out, I don't know where all of his energy comes from, he is like a monkey who drank a pot of coffee. All of a sudden he is climbing on EVERYTHING, and NEVER. stops. moving.
Since it has been so hot, we have been spending a lot of time in the water. The splash pad and the Liz Carpenter Fountain at Butler Park is where I foresee us spending most of our time since taking two babies who cant swim to the pool (by myself) is an accident waiting to happen.

We decided that after our run this morning we would just swing by the fountain and check it out.

It was a hit, and both boys are now soundly sleeping in their beds.

Owen is still our chill little baby.
He spend Memorial Day just chillaxin in the hammock snacking on some toes.
And goes along with the flow no matter what.

He loves Eli, thinks his room is the coolest place in the house, and wants to be everywhere he is.  Although Eli is very 'two' these days, he has been extremely patient and loving with him.  He is always concerned about where Owen is, tries to share his snacks and toys, wants him in his crib with him before nap time, and wants to run in his room and get him up when Owen wakes up from his nap. In the car the other day Eli saw a really cool truck and he said "Did you see that Owey? That was really cool Owey, did you see it?" Melt my  heart.
The love is mutual. Owen heard Eli fussing when he woke up the other morning and made a B-line to the door of his room and just sat there until I opened the door for him.
