Fast forward to a a few weeks ago, and I was cleaning out my closet and I found the box and decided to open it and really check out what was in it. It knocked me off my feet.....it smelled just like Mom. Just like her. It was like I just walked into her house, or hugged her, or like she was giving me a hug from heaven. It really shook me up and tears started flowing. Once I was able to pull myself together, I took out the contents of the box and found that the quilt actually had a lot completed already, and that all the quilt pieces had already been cut out. It was pretty amazing. I was immediately on a mission to find a way to finish the quilt so that we could use it at home. A few days later I was dropping it off with a woman in our neighborhood to finish it for me. When I was telling the boys about the quilt and how special it would be for us to have it, Owen told me that at school the other day, he saw a book called Mathilda and it made him really sad because it made him think about Grandma. He has always been really in tune with his emotions and wise beyond his years. It reminded me of the time after my great uncle Leon passed away and I was crying. Owen was only 3 1/2! He said to me "Mommy, just because he is gone doesn't mean you cant love him anymore."
When the day came to pick up the quilt, I was so excited. It was beautiful. I walked out of the quilters house and my body was engulfed in chills. I know it was Mom letting me know she was with me.
When the boys got home from school, they all were so excited to see it and loved it.
So the next day at school, Eli saw Owen walking to the office with his teacher, Mrs. Blake. And after school Eli was asking him what he was doing. Owen said he was feeling really sad and thinking about Grandma and Mrs. Blake let him walk with her for a little extra time just the two of them to talk about it until he felt better. I have loved Mrs. Blake since the day I met her, but this was just so amazing. I e-mailed her that evening to thank her for taking such good care of my boy and this was her response...
I know this quilt will forever be in our family and will always be a special quilt to all of us. I know she is looking over us and I feel her every time I wrap myself in her quilt. She is so missed. Sundays are not the same without her and her "beautiful chair" where she would watch "beautiful movies" looks to empty 💛
